Plumbing & PHE System Sizing for Multi-Story Commercial Towers (NBC 2016)

Plumbing & PHE System Sizing for Multi-Story Commercial Towers (NBC 2016)

Public Health Engineering (PHE) encompasses water supply storage, distribution networks, soil & waste drainage, and storm-water management. High-rise commercial towers demand specialized pressure zone zoning to prevent pipe burst or cavitation.

1. Calculating Water Storage Tank Capacities

As per NBC 2016 guidelines, commercial office buildings require 45 Liters Per Head Per Day (LPHD). Domestic Underground Storage Tank (UGST) should store a minimum 1-day reserve, while the Overhead Tank (OHT) holds 0.5-day domestic supply plus dedicated static fire storage reserve.

2. Water Pipe Sizing using Hunter’s Fixture Unit Method

Peak water flow is calculated by assigning Fixture Units (WSFU) to each sanitary fixture (water closets, washbasins, urinals) and converting total WSFU to continuous design GPM/LPM flow rates.
